Thanks to the vision and generosity of Bessie Anathan, a former member
of NCJW and community leader, Anathan House, 1620 Murray Ave., has been
our home since 1963 - more than 45 years! The building has an interesting
and eclectic background, including being used as a school and a Jewish
house of study before The Anathan Foundation bought it in 1962.
Community
In addition to NCJW's activities, which bring people of all ages from
many areas to Anathan House, countless people use the facility through
the programs and services offered by other tenants in the building.
These include:
- Anathan Club, a daily supportive program for adults with memory deficits and their caregivers
- Junior League of Pittsburgh, women's community service group
- The Living-At-Home Program of the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center (UPMC), providing free case management for ongoing in-home care
for older adults
- Or L'Simcha, a new, traditional Jewish congregation
Anathan House Campaign
Anathan House is 90 years old. Its extensive use has created a need to
update its infrastructure, meet current space needs, meet government
codes including ADA compliance, and install an up-to-date information
technology infrastructure.
The renovation project is expected to cost well over $1 million.
To enable the organization to provide ongoing building maintenance, an
additional amount will be sought for an endowment fund, bringing the
Campaign goal to almost $2 million.
The entire NCJW membership, foundations and corporations, all of whom
have never been solicited for an NCJW capital campaign, are getting the
message: The first capital campaign in the long history of NCJW,
Pittsburgh Section, has been launched.
The Campaign steering committee and cabinet are in place, and to date,
approximately $800,000 in gifts and pledges has been raised.
