The Center for Women has received a three-year grant totaling $90,000 from the Eden Hall Foundation to expand the Internship Program. The Center’s Internship Program offers women returning to the workforce the opportunity to enhance job skills, network, and fill the gaps in their employment history. This is done by placing women into unpaid work experiences at local businesses and nonprofit organizations.
This unique program has helped 27 women since launching in January 2014. The grant monies will be used to expand the number of women served through the Internship program to 60 individuals by increasing the Internship Manager’s hours, providing transportation assistance, and offering a small completion stipend to women who complete an internship of ten weeks or longer.
Sarah Burke participated in the Internship Program and was placed at Lawrenceville United to work on their marketing and communications efforts. As a direct result of her internship, Ms. Burke learned about a position, interviewed, and was offered a full-time job at the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation. “The Center for Women’s internship program was a lifeline during one of the most difficult times of my life,” says Sarah. “Not only did it help me find my current job, but it also offered a support network that kept long-term unemployment from destroying my self-esteem. I was new to Pittsburgh, and the program gave me the chance to prove my skills, form meaningful relationships, and keep my resume fresh during my job search. I’m thrilled that this grant will help The Center continue to open doors for women in transition.”
The Eden Hall Foundation, one of a small handful of private foundations in Western Pennsylvania with a female executive staff, has become one of the largest contributors to programs and projects that support women in southwestern Pennsylvania. NCJW and The Center for Women are incredibly grateful to the Eden Hall Foundation for the opportunity to serve more women through the Internship Program.
