About the Children’s Room

The Children’s Room in the courts is a program run by the National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section (NCJW PGH) that serves hundreds of children each month, both from families with court business and jurors, at no cost to caregivers. Since 2001, we have provided over 60,000 children with a safe haven removed from the stress and difficulties of the courtroom. This program serves infants through teens. 


Job Details

The Child Care Associate is responsible for maintaining a safe, trauma informed and stimulating environment for children and youth in NCJW PGH’s Children’s Room in the Courts. This role is important to the mission, philosophy, and objectives of NCJW PGH.

This is a part-time, 32-hour per week position.

Essential Duties:

  • Use established trauma informed care practices to support children’s emotional and social development
  • Conduct oneself as a “role model” for children; provide appropriate direction to children in their daily routine; commit to a positive reinforcement modality as it relates to child development
  • Engage in and supervise age-appropriate play activities with children
    • Read to children, engage them in drawing and handicrafts 
    • Organize and participate in recreational activities and games with children
  • Assist in preparing food and serving meals and refreshments to children 
  • Organize, store and sanitize toys, materials and play equipment to ensure order in activity areas
  • Maintain a cooperative, professional, and positive demeanor with adults during sign in and check out
  • Maintain a cooperative, professional, and positive demeanor with all onsite partners including court staff, judges, deputies and UPMC clinic staff
  • Attend staff meetings and organizational/departmental trainings as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
  • Experience working in a trauma informed childcare setting and/or diploma in Early Childhood Education
  • Currently have or be able to get Act 33/34 clearances
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass a background check

    • Handle confidential issues appropriately 
    • Must have the compassion and flexibility to meet the changing needs of children/youth
    • Ability to follow directions, handle multiple tasks, and make sound decisions 
  • Handle emergencies and life-threatening situations effectively

Physical Requirements:

The job can be physically demanding. 

  • Must be able to stand for long periods 
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry children weighing as much as 40 pounds
  • Be sufficiently agile and alert to respond instantly to any emergency or accident
  • Be physically able to evacuate children quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.
