On Tuesday, May 20th, NCJW will hold our 2014 Annual Meeting from 6–9 p.m. at Rodef Shalom Congregation. Annual Meeting committee co-chairs Elyse Eichner, Laurie Gottlieb, Susan Foreman Jordan, and Lynette Lederman knew they had a huge challenge ahead of them after such a successful 2013 Annual Meeting, but they feel confident that they’ve risen to the task!
Our guest speaker will be Liz Murray. Growing up in the Bronx in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Liz had to grapple with being the daughter of drug addicts, which meant having to raise and take care of herself. After years of neglect, Liz left home at 15 and spent her adolescence living on the streets or sleeping on the couches of friends. Her story could have ended tragically, but she won a scholarship to Harvard University and graduated in 2009. Today she is a motivational speaker and founder and director of
Manifest Living, a New York-based company that offers workshops designed to support adults in making empowered choices in their lives. Murray will share her story with us on May 20th.
In addition, we will have a very special tribute in remembrance of past NCJW president Judi Kasdan. Judi served as president of NCJW Pittsburgh Section from 1995–98 and was instrumental in the success and growth of NCJW’s Children’s Rooms in the Courts. The program’s three playrooms now serve over 5,000 children each year.
Judi’s good friends Phyllis Harris, Roz Neiman, Lynne Siegel, Mona Strassburger, and Linda Wozman are planning a touching tribute in commemoration of her life and significant contributions to the Children’s Rooms and to NCJW as a whole.
General admission tickets are available at $40 and Patron tickets at $125. Patron ticketholders will enjoy preferred seating and receive a copy of Liz Murray’s book, Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard (which can personalized during the reception). In addition, Patrons become de-facto members of our host committee and have their names included in the evening’s program. The evening will culminate with a dessert reception and book signing for all attendees.
Invitations will be mailed shortly, or you can purchase tickets online or by phone at 412-421-6118. See you on May 20th!
